Many of us have aspirations and dreams that we’d like to achieve in our lifetime. as you know, the humble bucket list is a collation of things people would like to do before the span of their lives. Often, they contain travel destinations, life-goals and plans for the future. At lot can be said about a person from their bucket list, I’d argue.
As Honest Abe once said:
“And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”
It made me think of my own aspirations and goals; here are a few entries:
Visit New Zealand
While I’d ultimately love to travel the world, realistically, I know that is not entirely possible. My ultimate dream location, however, is New Zealand. Ever since discovering the world of J. R. R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, NZ has been my dream destination to explore. It’s a majestical, awe-inspiring country in the far reaches of the world that would be an honour to see with my own eyes.
“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list” – Susan Sontag
As the quote above so aptly puts it, my travel ambitions do not end there: Scandinavia follows at a close second and thirdly, Italy.
Learn Another Language
Secondly, I’d love to broaden my horizons by learning to speak another language. While I have basic knowledge of French and German, I’m currently learning conversational Danish.
My interest in Scandinavian cinema and culture has led to a growing understanding of the language so I thought I’d take it a bit further and learn a language that is only spoken by 6 million. “Why?” you may ask; “Why not”, I shall respectfully reply.
Learn to Drive Ride a Motorbike
Having already checked off ‘learn to drive’ entry on my list, I’d love to learn how to ride a motorcycle. Sheer curiosity and the romantic ideal of riding around Rome or Florence fuels this bucket list entry.
We only have one life on this Earth, after all, we may as well make the most of it, don’t you think?
Write a Book
I have tried and failed multiple times to complete a writing project. I have a multitude of ‘Chapter Ones’ hidden away that, had I possessed the perseverance to complete them, could have been finished books by now.
One of my bucket list entries is to write a book in the vain hope that one day I’m content enough to sit and write one through to its end. The feeling of completion must truly be amazing.
Own an Aston Martin
This is an aspirational goal and a half! I have this image in my head of myself as a pensioner cruising around in a vintage DB5, Audrey-Hepburn-style headscarf and all, blasting show tunes.
Sounds fabulous, wouldn’t you agree? (Ideally, finding a partner who can dabble in mechanics and look after such a vintage model would be perfect in this scenario.)
This is by no means a complete list. By my very nature, I am a dreamer with my head often in the clouds. I don’t think anyone’s bucket list is ever truly complete – such is the fluid nature of our dreams.
Following that little insight into my aspirations, I’d much rather hear yours! Feel free to leave a comment below.
