Putting Pen to Paper

I love writing, always have, always will. It’s been a long-time habit of mine, ever since I was a child writing in diary entries to writing screenplays today as an adult. While I’d love to sit down and write everyday, in all honesty, it’s not that simple (for me, at least).

What’s amazing about the process is that inspiration can strike you at any moment. After long months of writer’s block, character names or lines of dialogue can pop into your head without warning.

Before smartphones and tablets, I used to write these ideas on coffee shop napkins or discarded leaflets when I’d forgotten a notepad. It’s these fleeting moments of inspiration that make writing such a joy when everything comes together.

Searching for inspiration, I came across this poem by Christy Ann Martine. I’m not usually a poetry person, but this poem certainly resonated with me:

It’s a delightful poem that truly sums up the writing process. I hopefully plan to revisit unfinished screenplays that I have lying around – little gems of inspiration like this encourage me to do so.

Do you know of any other poems that inspire you to write?

Let me know the comments.

Thanks for reading, as always.

I thought I beat writers block by simply doing most of my work at 3AM when I can’t sleep. However, my most recent short story has no conclusion. I’ve been sitting on it for days. It’s driving me crazy. With billions of possible solutions, why can’t I land one?

    Great post

Thank you, Mark! Writer’s block is like a bad cold that won’t leave you. Taking a break and walking away from your story usually helps. Hopefully when you come back to it, you’ll have a fresh perspective. Good luck!

  2. Everything that you said is true. The writer’s block thing is accurate. I just love your first sentence because it reminds me of me.

Thank you so much! It’s lovely to hear that you enjoy writing as much as I do, writer’s block and all!
